about this site
We have been focusing on ameliorating light pollution since 2010. Reviewing the research early on, we found out amber lighting is the optimal all-around choice for reducing light pollution. It also optimal for minimizing impacts to human health and disruption of circadian rhythm across species.
This was a complicated discovery, in the days that the first LED lamping in big cities had been 6000 or 5000 kelvin (super bright white!!!), 4000k was still recommended by some, and true amber lighting (which measures at abuot 1600 kelvin) was generally known as “turtle friendly,” as it proved to be least disruptive to sea turtle populations.
We were waiting to find corroboration, and realized that the folks in Flagstaff, Arizona USA had been using amber lighitng all along! Their experience shows that amber lighting is safe for vehicle traffic, does not encourage crime, and is enjoyed by citizens, visitors, and the local astronomical research community.
We are here to make the AMBER STANDARD easy to understand, easy to implement, and easy to share, so WE CAN ALL SEE THE MILKY WAY AGAIN!
